Mark Sharman is Managing Director of Sharpham Partnership Ltd. After graduating as a mining engineer and working in a Canadian goldmine, he took over the running of Sharpham vineyard from Maurice Ash in 1988 and then the cheese dairy in 1990. In that year, he also became the winemaker at Sharpham and developed the business to focus on high quality wine and cheese and providing an excellent visitor experience.
Duncan Schwab is Head Winemaker and Wine Sales and Marketing Manager. In 1992, he came to Sharpham to get some wine experience, following his father’s purchase of a three-acre vineyard in Cornwall. Twenty six years later and Duncan is one of the most experienced and reputable winemakers in the UK. He lives in Ashburton with his wife Chloe, their two girls and young son.
Office Manager & Accounts
Abby Smith is Office Manager & Accounts. She started at Sharpham in 1992 following a career change after being a full time professional foster parent for twelve years. In her twenty six years here she has been a part time cheesemaker, helped out at events and tastings and worked in the shop. Now Abby manages all the accounts and keeps our paperwork and finances in order! She is a keen singer, performing regularly in a choir and is proud grandmother to Oscar, Scarlett and Edi.
Debbie Mumford is Head Cheesemaker. She joined Sharpham as a vineyard technician in 1988 and took over the cheesemaking in 1990. At this time it was Debbie and one assistant. Debbie now leads a team of nine cheesemakers in the purpose built cheese dairy, constructed in 2003. Debbie is an accomplished and successful horsewoman having competed in the Horse of the Year Show at Olympia.
Carl Elesmore is a cheesemaker. He has been at Sharpham for five years. Carl doubles up as our resident maintainence man at Sharpham and loves anything DIY as well as his passion for showing classic cars.
Our Vineyard Manager, Peter Sudworth joined us in 2001 after a varied career in Britain and abroad, including six years working in South Korea. His interests include music, cycling, growing organic veg and restoring vintage guitars.
Having spent the last few years working as a Sommelier overseas, Tom returned to England and was immediately impressed with the quality of wine being produced on our own soil. He has recently joined us from renowned restaurant Gidleigh Park where he worked on the Sommelier team, where he still offers his service on occasion. Tom has developed a greater knowledge of the production side of the industry since joining us and gives our visitors an in depth insight into the industry and more specifically Sharpham itself. Tom has a passion for travel, has surfed his whole life and is constantly looking at developing his wine knowledge.
Tommy came to us 5 years ago, aged 17 without any wine experience. After a season of labelling and bottling the wine as a summer job for some extra cash, he developed a love for English wine and left school to work a wine harvest. Now he’s our assistant winemaker and is hands on with everything from grape receival to distributing our products and everything in-between.
